Once soil + oceans were buffers against global warming. Seas and land are less able to soak up or store greenhouse gases. More carbon emissions enter the atmosphere, holding in heat from the sun. Studies show a gradual increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide CO2 over the last half-century has accelerated the release of methane and nitrous oxide in the soil. These gases are 25 times more effective at trapping radiation than CO2, the principal greenhouse gas by volume. Earth's atmosphere changes too fast for Nature to slow global warming. Study how CO2 affects the capacity of different soils - in forests, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural fields. More CO2 increased nitrous oxide in all soils, but soils in rice paddies and wetlands released more methane in particular. The culprits are microscopic soil organisms that breathe in CO2 and exhale methane. The more carbon dioxide in the air, the more these single-cell greenhouse-gas factories thrive. The carbon credit to faster plant growth driven by extra CO2 in the air must be revised, scientists say. The negative impact of greenhouse gases cannot compensated by higher co2 levels. These two greenhouse gases don't increase the potential of ecosystems to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Evidence that global warming is eroding the ability of the ocean to soak up CO2. Earth's seas take up roughly one-third of all human carbon emissions, but how this sponge responds to rising CO2 levels is a tough question. In the North Atlantic rising air and water temperatures were slowing the pace at which carbon is absorbed across a large portion of this ocean's subtropical zones. Warmer oceans leads to less carbon storage. The ocean sink is already weakened. The ocean will keep its equilibration meaning the balance between atmospheric and ocean carbon levels but will not take much more carbon because it's getting warmer at the same time - warmer water cannot hold as much CO2 as colder water. Result: Earth ocean's temperatures are rising, ocean's environmental carbon capacity decreases. More to do to keep Nature beautiful

The Arctic Ocean is a busy place in the summer— whales migrating, walrus hauling out on the ice and more recently on land, Inupiat natives gathering food to sustain them through the coming harsh winter. This summer is going to be especially busy on another front with a number of decisions to be made by the Department of the Interior (DOI) and Environmental Protection Agency EPA concerning Big Oil's plans to drill for oil and the environmental consequences of these actions. DOI recently paved the way for drilling to progress in the Arctic's Chukchi Sea, even though the government has determined that significant scientific data are missing and has estimated that a spill there could release oil at a rate comparable to the Deepwater Horizon Gulf spill. Government estimates indicate a spill in the Chukchi could gush at a rate that is five times higher than what Shell Oil claims they are prepared to handle. At the Prudhoe Bay industrial complex, a haze hovers above the tundra in the summer. The decades-old drilling complex has air quality worse than the entire Washington, DC metro area! In 2009, Shell applied for air quality permits from the EPA for proposed drilling operations in the Arctic's Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. After feeling the tremendous pressure of Shell's team of lobbyists, the EPA issued lax permits for the expansion of their drilling operations, giving Shell a pass to pollute in the Arctic. These permits were declared unlawful twice within the last year, but Shell continues to increase its plans to drill, while skirting air quality laws. EPA will again review Shell's bloated and risky plans this summer. If there's one lesson we've learned from the Gulf spill, it's that Americans can no longer rely on the oil industry's shallow assurances. When it comes to the Arctic, if you can't clean up a spill, you can't drill. We're going to need your help to ensure Shell isn't allowed to move forward with its dirty and dangerous plans to drill in America's Arctic Ocean
