Oil Spill Facts

Earth needs an environmental balance! Search BSB
Why is an oil spill bad for us?

Because ONE drop of oil contaminates huge amounts of water!
Water we need, water marine life needs, water plants need!

Because oil spills change the surface of water, water will evaporate differently!
Water vapor that feeds our clouds, that gives us rain!

Because oil on the water surface changes the amount of heat that our ocean store!
Water in our oceans gets warmer when the surface is darker, when evaporational cooling is disturbed leading to more violent climate change!

Because oil in ocean water is a problem for desalination plants that provide humans with drinking water!
Water we need, humans need to drink water on a regular basis or humans die!
We have talked to many scientist who tell us, even years after the spill, they have seen with their own eyes, oil plumes, oil mud on the ocean floor, oil in many marine creatures.

Toxic water pollution - not good for humans, not good for marine life, not good for our future...
But even after decades the damage from oil spills can be seen; after decades marine life is still suffering from oil spills
Oil on the Gulf of Mexico floor is still causing a dead zones where only bacteria can live feeding on oil

We think safety and the health of all people on Earth are more important than fast profits for some people!

A bacteria that is capable to eat oil is nowadays multiplying fast in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Plankton is contaminated with oil. Plankton is food for many sea animals. Scientist checked and found poisoned plant plankton, contaminated with oil and toxic dispersants.
Oil chemicals found in the intestines of crabs. About 68% of the spilled oil is drifting now under the ocean surface.
Many smaller oil spills have happened, in March in the shipping channel of Houston, last July when a ship was hitting an empty oil rig. 2 miles of surface oil can be seen near New Orleans.
Imagine: How many billion dollars has the American taxpayer to spend for all the additional work public workers have to do because of the oil spill?
Imagine: All these billions spent on better insulation, on better public transportation, on lower taxes?

The dimensions of the Gulf of Mexico disaster are still not known. Other oil spills have followed.
Over 200 million gallons of oil had been polluting the Gulf of Mexico. The chemicals used by BP are toxic for all life. BP used it to break the oil down in smaller pieces, so the public wouldn't recognized to huge oil disaster. Marine robots are removing the containment cap and replace with a new one. The old containment cap over the gushing well head in the Gulf of Mexico was only capturing small parts of the oil. The new cap is still holding back the oil.

Tropical storms have moved more tar balls from the oil spill to beaches.

Oil substances from the oil spill have entered the food chain in the Gulf of Mexico.
Petroleum in food is causing cancer and brain damage.
Can you imagine how long it will take, to remove contaminated sea food, that is dangerous to eat?

Hundreds of millions gallons of oil have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.
(your bath tub has about 25 gallons).
Fumes from evaporating oil become a bigger health concern.
Sharks, turtles, mullets, crabs, rays and small fish congregate by the thousands off Gulf coast lines, fleeing the oil contaminated gulf areas, that had killed many of them. Many of the beautiful sea birds will not be seen ever again...
BP made a series of shortcuts: Greed took over, and with it the danger of an oil spill increased, leading to the worst man-made environmental disaster Earth ever experienced.
Huge plumes of chemically altered oil are moving under the ocean surface changing the whole Eco-system for many decades.

Additionally BP has used toxic chemicals to disperse oil spilling out of the broken pipe, adding big hazards for humans and sea life.
Oil chemically altered by BP will change the Gulf of Mexico for decades.
BP has increased the amount of air pollution burning a lot of oil = more greenhouse gases - isn't that crazy? Burning oil releases sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane and other chemicals.

The US-Government had announced that "to make sure that the unprecedented disaster" will not happen again, an "Oil Spill Commission" has been created, signed by executive order.

oil equipment over the oil spill
We have informed our members about the importance of ocean currents. The Gulf stream current transports warm water towards Europe.
water temperatures are rising supporting an active hurricane season in the gulf of Mexico oil spill region. Storm can carry contaminated ocean water far inland - water pollution, destruction of marine habitat, nature and wildlife endangered in this worst environmental disaster for the US
Ocean water temperatures are changed by oil pollution.
pollution facts show that rising CO2 levels destroy sustainability, a sustainable life is not achievable. The graph shows recent monthly mean carbon dioxide CO2 measured at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii. CO2 record plus the current year are shown. Data are reported as a dry air mole fraction defined as the number of molecules of carbon dioxide divided by the number of all molecules in air, including CO2 itself, after water vapor has been removed. The mole fraction is expressed as parts per million (ppm). Example: 0.000400 is expressed as 400 ppm. In the above figure, the dashed red line with diamond symbols represents the monthly mean values. moving average of SEVEN adjacent seasonal cycles centered on the month, except for the first and last THREE and one-half years of the record, corrected to the seasonal cycles. Air conservation becomes very important
Can you see a trend??

global issues include global warming, global dimming, global climate, global temperatures, global oceans, global rainforests, international contamination, whales, coral reefs flora and fauna animals an plants Cap and trade - governments try to reduce emissions to reduce the effects of climate change caused by burning fossil fuels with a regulatory system called cap and trade. With cap and trade emissions or hazardous air pollution shall be capped - certificates can be traded to lower the output of power plants and factories. Air pollution is causing global warming with violent weather, with hurricanes, world wide floods, tsunamis, human illnesses as asthma, heart disease, respiratory sickness, cancer, Parkinson, Alzheimer international non profit Bear Springs Blossom nature conservation takes action on global dimming. Global dimming reduces the heating up of planet earth. Global Dimming is caused by the same factors that cause global warming and climate change: Burning fossil fuels in huge amounts. Air pollution with visual particles is reducing the greenhouse effect, because the sun cannot shine through all the smog. But pollutants, aerosols are causing human illnesses as asthma, heart disease, respiratory sickness, cancer, illnesses, Parkinson, Alzheimer globally. Butterflies are endangered by pesticides, by air pollution, by water pollution, by oil spills Many butterflies will die because of oil spills!
Chemicals can kill a bug, they can kill you too
- most of the time, it is only a question of the amount you are contaminated with.
Scientists have proved, that even small amount
of chemicals will harm humans, often not immediately, but in coming years.
Most chemicals are dangerous to human beings and cause additionally soil contamination
and water contamination.

what can I do

types of pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution, oil pollution
Marine pollution is mostly land based. The pollution often comes from agricultural runoff and wind blown debris.
Many potentially toxic chemicals adhere to tiny particles which are then taken up by plankton and benthos animals, most of which are either deposit or filter feeders. In this way, the toxins are concentrated upward within ocean food chains. Many particles combine chemically in a manner highly depletive of oxygen, causing estuaries to become anoxic.
When pesticides are incorporated into the marine ecosystem, they quickly become absorbed into marine food webs. Once in the food webs, these pesticides can cause mutations, as well as diseases, which are harmful to humans as well as the entire food web.
Toxic metals are also introduced into marine food webs. These causes a change to tissue matter, biochemistry, behavior, reproduction, and suppress growth in marine life. Often animal feeds are produced from sea life - so marine toxins are transferred to land animals, and appear later in meat and dairy products - then eaten by humans.

The remaining 1% is available to meet human needs. If you're an adult, your body contains about 40 quarts or 10 gallons of water - A man's body is 60-65% water. A woman's is 50-60% water - The human brain is about 75% water - Muscle tissue contains a large amount of water - Fat tissues contain virtually no water. Men tend to have more muscle as a percentage of body weight while women have more fat - You lose 2.5 to 3 quarts of water per day through normal elimination, sweating and breathing - If you exercise or live in a humid climate, you may lose another quarter - It has zero calories and zero sugar, but a good drink of water can reduce hunger - Water also helps your body metabolize stored fats, helps maintain proper muscle tone, and helps rid the body of wastes - Lawn sprinkling uses the most water outdoors. Inside, toilets use the most, with an average of 27 gallons per person per day. Laundry averages 17 gallons per person per day and showers 14 gallons. Typically, less than 1% of the treated drinking water produced by utilities is actually consumed by people - Most goes for lawns, showers and tubs, toilets

BSB recycling facts: Recycling to save resources! All raw materials and all energy are provided by our blue planet Earth, but they are NOT endless. Unfortunately, most of the provided raw materials + energy are not usable as they appear in Nature and are spread globally in deposits. Men need to use a lot of energy + resources to produce the materials we need. We have to collect, clean, concentrate, and transform these resources to generate primary raw materials that are usable for people and industry. Using recycled materials reduces the amount of energy + reduces the amount of materials we have to dig out! Most of all things we use can be recycled!
