Oil spill facts |
|
Why is an oil spill bad for us? Because on drop of oil contaminates huge amounts of water! Water we need, water marine life needs, water plants need! We have talked to many scientist who tell us they have seen with their own eyes, oil plumes, oil mud on the ocean floor, oil in many marine creatures. But we get information from government officials, that are telling us that oil is gone, just disappeared. Confused? We know about weird information when money is involved. We ask us the question: What will this person gain when it tell us these 'news'? We know that big oil is spending millions of Dollars to influence elections, thats is public knowledge. We know that big oil was paying government workers to be quite and not talk about all the damages oil drilling is causing.. Is money talking again? In the moment we don't know. We just don't know why University professors would tell lies about oil on the Gulf of Mexico floor? If you know an explanation, please send us an email!! We think safety and the health of the American people are more important than fast profits for some people! A bacteria that is capable to eat oil is nowadays multiplying fast in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Plankton is contaminated with oil. Plankton is food for many sea animals. Scientist checked and found poisoned plant plankton, contaminated with oil and toxic dispersants. Oil chemicals found in the intestines of crabs. About 68% of the spilled oil is drifting now under the ocean surface. Another small oil spill happened in July when a ship was hitting an empty oil rig. 2 miles of surface oil can be seen near New Orleans. Imagine: How many billion dollars has the American taxpayer to spend for all the additional work public workers have to do because of the oil spill? Imagine: All these billions spent on better insulation, on better public transportation, on lower taxes? The dimensions of the Gulf of Mexico disaster are still not known. Other oil spills have followed. Over 200 million gallons of oil had been polluting the Gulf of Mexico. The chemicals used by BP are toxic for all life. BP used it to break the oil down in smaller pieces, so the public wouldn't recognized to huge oil disaster. Marine robots are removing the containment cap and replace with a new one. The old containment cap over the gushing well head in the Gulf of Mexico was only capturing small parts of the oil. The new cap is still holding back the oil. Tropical storms have moved more tar balls from the oil spill to beaches. Oil substances from the oil spill have entered the food chain in the Gulf of Mexico. Petroleum in food is causing cancer and brain damage. Can you imagine how long it will take, to remove contaminated sea food, that is dangerous to eat? Hundreds of millions gallons of oil have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. (your bath tub has about 25 gallons). Fumes from evaporating oil become a bigger health concern. Sharks, turtles, mullets, crabs, rays and small fish congregate by the thousands off Gulf coast lines, fleeing the oil contaminated gulf areas, that had killed many of them. Many of the beautiful sea birds will not be seen ever again... BP made a series of shortcuts: Greed took over, and with it the danger of an oil spill increased, leading to the worst man-made environmental disaster Earth ever experienced. Huge plumes of chemically altered oil are moving under the ocean surface changing the whole Eco-system for many decades. Additionally BP has used toxic chemicals to disperse oil spilling out of the broken pipe, adding big hazards for humans and sea life. Oil chemically altered by BP will change the Gulf of Mexico for decades. BP has increased the amount of air pollution burning a lot of oil = more greenhouse gases - isn't that crazy? Burning oil releases sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane and other chemicals. The US-Government had announced that "to make sure that the unprecedented disaster" will not happen again, an "Oil Spill Commission" has been created, signed by executive order. ![]() We have informed our members about the importance of ocean currents. The Gulf stream current transports warm water towards Europe. ![]() Ocean water temperatures are changed by oil pollution. |

Marine pollution is mostly land based. The pollution often comes from agricultural runoff and wind blown debris. Many potentially toxic chemicals adhere to tiny particles which are then taken up by plankton and benthos animals, most of which are either deposit or filter feeders. In this way, the toxins are concentrated upward within ocean food chains. Many particles combine chemically in a manner highly depletive of oxygen, causing estuaries to become anoxic. When pesticides are incorporated into the marine ecosystem, they quickly become absorbed into marine food webs. Once in the food webs, these pesticides can cause mutations, as well as diseases, which are harmful to humans as well as the entire food web. Toxic metals are also introduced into marine food webs. These causes a change to tissue matter, biochemistry, behavior, reproduction, and suppress growth in marine life. Often animal feeds are produced from sea life - so marine toxins are transferred to land animals, and appear later in meat and dairy products - then eaten by humans. 20. March 1970 - Kollision des Tankers «Othello» vor Schweden. Schätzungsweise bis 100.000 Tonnen Öl laufen aus. 19. December 1972 - Kollision des Tankers «Sea Star» im Golf von Oman. 115.000 Tonnen Öl laufen aus. 12. 5.
