Overgrazed - destroyed Nature
Overgrazing destroys Nature|
Overgrazed properties ares one of the big global problems. In the US people overgraze their properties because there are tax incentives to have agricultural use. But many properties do not support so many cows. In other countries people don't have enough land to feed their livestock so cows looking for food, eat the grass down to the ground.
A good example how overgrazing has destroyed the landscape and the livelihood of many people is the Texas Hill Country. When the first settler came to Texas, the Texas Hill Country looked very different. Some areas were called 'rolling hills' because high grasses moved with the wind.
Springs could be seen and used everywhere. There was a thick layer of soil on the limestone hills.
But when ranchers started to put fences around their properties, the cows could not roam anymore. They started to climb up the slopes and every step opened up the ground for big erosion. The next rain was using the holes to wash away the soil, and after a few decades all the soil was washed away. Many ranches had to close, almost nothing grows on bare limestone caliche, but juniperus asheii, the so called Texas Cedar, was able to grow. Now we have millions of "TX cedars" in the Hill Country, just because of overgrazed properties.
Another problem was, that most of the springs stopped running. Without soil, without the grasses, the rain water was running away, no water was seeping into the ground, the springs went dry ....
Nowadays the groundwater levels are getting lower and lower, and still we see so many overgrazed properties ...
In the past people did not know, how bad overgrazing is for the land. But today everyone who is interested can learn about. But often we get the answer: I don't care - so we know that this kind of thinking has changed Earth!
Once upon a time everywhere on Earth were beautiful native grasses:|
Grasses have a very important function:
1) Grasses cover and protect the land
2) Grasses slow down erosion
3) Grasses give food and shelter to many animals
4) Grasses clear our drinking water
5) Grasses support springs
6) Grasses hold back carbon dioxide CO2.
Look at the photo with the cattle..
This land was once beautiful
A book describes it: '.. a man on a horse was barely able to look over the grasses ...'
Imagine the variety of flora and fauna, that once called this place HOME.
But property values went up, property taxes went up, and the owner decided to reduce his tax burden and get ag exempt.
What kind of weird politics is it to promise people money for destroying their land?
Common sense would charge people for their destructive behavior.
How can these rules force people to destroy the future of our children?
Ask the person you voted for why he allows this destruction of our future!
Ask your political leaders WHY they try to kill your children's future?
Some countries offer a solution for responsible people:
